Photographers honour camera expert Pete
Steam photography has lost another highly regarded compatriot with the death on October 8 of Hull-based Pete Millar, following a heart attack. He was 70. A mystery illness was diagnosed just two weeks before his death as motor neurone disease. He had earlier had to pull out of an expedition to Romania. Photographer friends as far away as Germany packed the chapel at Haltemprice Crematorium in Hull, on October 21, to pay respect to Pete, an occasional contributor to books and magazines, who was seen as in the top rank of steam photographers, with good humour and an ever-present sense of fun. Perhaps his most memorable image - a stunning contre-jour shot of No. 46229 Duchess of Hamilton at Blea Moor - was one of several to become front covers on Steam Railway and Steam World, and the image featured in his memorial service programme. He leaves a wife, Lorraine, and children, Iain and Anna.
