{ ‘STEAM’S LAST BLAST’}

- jrh@johnhillier.co.uk).

The BLS’ appeal to restore Bahamas was so named because the fitting of the ‘Jubilee’s’ double chimney and blastpipe in 1961 represents the last attempt by BR to improve the performance of steam traction, ending over 130 years of such development that began with Stephenson’s Rocket in 1829. In spite of the HLF award, funds are still needed to cover the purchase and overhaul of No. 45596’s support coach, the locomotive’s ongoing maintenance, and a legacy fund for future overhauls. Donations of £50 or over will be rewarded with membership of the BLS. For details of how to donate, visit www.bahamas45596.co.uk or contact Mr C.P. Ritchie, 41 Beech Park, West Hill, Ottery St Mary, Devon EX11 1UG. Readers can obtain further information about the BLS and No. 45596 from John Hillier (01572 747706, or email
