£5k needed to rescue British ‘19D’

-

Plans to move British‑built ex‑South African Railways ‘19D’ Saiccor No. 3, which will “ensure the survival of this superb locomotive”, are now in place, according to North British Locomotive Preservation Group Chairman Ken Livermore. However, unless £5,000 is raised in the next two months to cover haulage and loading costs, there is still a danger that the 4‑8‑2 could be scrapped. Arrangements have been made to move the ‘19D’ from its current home at the Sappi Saiccor Pulp Mill at Ukomaas to the Patons Country Railway depot at Creighton. The move is planned to take place in May, provided the group can raise the money. Mr Livermore says: “Donations and interest‑ free loans are urgently needed to help save this historic engine, which will be scrapped if it cannot be moved from the mill soon. “Anyone contributing £100 or more will receive a share certificate and part‑ownership of the locomotive. Please send donations to NBL Preservation Group, 4 Porchfield Close, Earley, Reading, Berkshire RG6 5YZ.” Moving Saiccor No. 3 will enable the group to carry out repairs and repaint the 4‑8‑2 while the search for a permanent home continues.
