HOW WOULD YOU TREAT A BROKEN CRANK SHAFT?

-

“Send for an assistant locomotive. In the meantime, take the side rods and driving brake blocks off, fill the leading and trailing axle boxes with oil and pack between the box top and framing of the leading and trailing, slack out the driving springs if fitted with adjusting screws. If fitted with plain hangers, I would wait until the assistant engine arrives and get it to draw the leading wheels onto wedges to take the weight off the driving springs. Then disable them by knocking the centre bolts out, ease the engine off the wedges and draw the driving wheels on to wedges. This will put the driving axle boxes against the framing, then pack between the box bottom and the horn stays so as to keep the flanges of the driving wheels one inch clear of the rails.” The Steam Locomotive, Its Failures And How To Deal With Them, LNER, 1927.
