When the first ‘USA’, No. 30063, was withdrawn in May 1962 due to collision damage, a shortage of gas was hindering cutting-up operations at Eastleigh Works – but the American engine was scrapped by the week ending June 2, after it was discovered that it could be dismantled simply by unbolting it.
