NEW HEIGHTS FOR A UNIQUE STRUCTURE
The bridge was honoured last year by the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE). It was shortlisted by the ICE’s regional branch for the North West Heritage Award, though it was pipped at the final stage by the even older and larger Blackpool Tower. The ICE did, however, present a Special Award for Civil Engineering Heritage to the bridge Friends’ group and Warrington Borough Council. Regional ICE Chairman John Gatheral said: “This is only the second time ICE North West has conferred an award for civil engineering heritage, and Warrington’s Transporter Bridge thoroughly deserves the accolade.”
