On September 6, the United States Navy launched a captured German V2 rocket from the deck of the aircraft carrier USS Midway. The test, known as Operation Sandy, was to prove the viability of a ship being used as a missile launch platform, and marked the first launch of a large rocket - and the only one of a V2 - from a ship at sea.
