CURMUDGEONLY GRICERS
I regularly read about the need to develop and nurture interest in steam locomotives within the future generations. However, when I take my grandchildren to enjoy the sight of passing engines, I am dismayed by some of the selfish, curmudgeonly gricers that I encounter lineside, particularly those with video cameras. These ‘enthusiasts’ hog the best viewing spots, making it difficult for small children to get a decent place to view the engines. They have as much right to stand in the position as I do. And what annoys me further is they expect little ones to be quiet for fear of spoiling their videos. My five- and three-year-old grandsons excitedly wave and cheer as the engine approaches and passes, to the noticeable annoyance of these ‘video nasties’. May I respectively ask them to lighten up a bit, and show some consideration for young children. If they want peaceful locations to film, then there are plenty of lineside locations they can (legally) access for that purpose, if they are only prepared to walk short distances. I realise that gricers come in all shapes, sizes and humours, and many are perfectly considerate to those around them. But to the others, and you will know who you are, don’t be so selfish! We should be more thoughtful in how we ‘influence’ the next generation of enthusiasts. The next person who tries to silence my grandchildren will be reported to ‘The Fat Controller’.
