ALynton & Barnstaple Railway design Manning Wardle 2-6-2T will work alongside a Baldwin 2-4-2T for the first time in 83 years at the Lynton & Barnstaple Railway. Ffestiniog Railway-based replica Manning Wardle No. 190 Lyd will operate alongside and in doubleheaded formation with fellow new-build Baldwin 2-4-2T No. 762 Lyn on the reopened one-mile line between Woody Bay and Killington Lane at the L&B’s Autumn Gala on September 29/30, 83 years to the day since the original L&B closed in 1935. Appropriately, the replica pair of Southern Railway-liveried tank engines will haul the line’s restored four-coach rake of L&B coaches, which have been painstakingly rebuilt using original parts, fully recreating the line’s Edwardian heyday. It will be the first time these two resurrected L&B designs …and 2017-built replica Baldwin 2-4-2T No. 762 Lyn at Woody Bay. have worked together since Lyn’s completion in September 2017. Lyd – based on the legendary No. 188 Lew, which was shipped to South America in 1936 for reuse in industry – has already visited Woody Bay three times since completion, but is normally to be found hauling trains over the Ffestiniog and Welsh Highland Railways. It was outshopped from Boston Lodge works in 2010. The L&B has been nominated for the Heritage Railway Association’s Morgan Award for outstanding achievement; ostensibly for the re-creation of a heritage/replica locomotive and train.
