‘SAINT’ GETS ITS GOLDEN HALO AS COPPER CAP CHIMNEY IS FITTED
With the boiler of Steam Railway appeal ‘Saint’ No. 2999 back in the frames (SR476), its chimney, smokebox door and safety valve have been fitted. Says Project Engineer Peter Chatman: “It’s now a case of finishing or making all the outstanding bits and then fitting everything on before we fire up and try moving.” The snifting and relief valves have been fitted to the cylinders, while the front valve chest covers are being made, and the boiler is receiving another coat of paint before lagging. The Churchward 4-6-0’s front cab windows have been glazed, and brass unions for the lubrication pipework have been machined ready to fit. On the tender, the water scoop has been de-rusted and painted, and the oil flap covers are being made.
