CORRECTIONS

I enjoyed Nicola Fox’s fascinating article on the Royal trains and carriages. I have to correct her on one thing – Queen Elizabeth ll is Her Majesty, not Her Royal Highness (I’ll visit you in the tower, Nicola!). Phil Martin, Ledbury, Herefordshire In SR479 you carried a photograph taken at the launch of the ‘Tracking our Heritage’ project. The caption wrongly credited the project to Peak Rail. The Heritage Lottery Fund application and award was actually made by, and to, the Derwent and Wye Valley Railway Trust – a registered charity limited by guarantee – quite separate from Peak Rail plc. David Lathrope, Chairman of the Board of Trustees (DWVRT) As far as I know there has never been a transporter bridge in Swansea (SR480). Newport yes – or have I missed something? Dave Whitfield, Hartlepool

Yes, it is indeed in Newport – Ed

The statue at the head of Loch Shiel isn’t Bonnie Prince Charlie (SR479), as is often assumed; it is a statue of an anonymous Highland soldier. Also, the Irish Sea seems to have drifted north if you can see it from Loch Nan Uamh! Geoff Smith, Rafford, Forres The reason that ‘Black Fives’ were not used to Mallaig (SR479) was not that they were unsuitable as has been proven by their record on the ‘Jacobite’, but because they wouldn’t fit on Mallaig’s 52-foot turntable. A ‘B1’ could just fit, providing the adjacent siding was clear of wagons, so they were rare, although not unknown. The line beyond Fort William was therefore largely left to 2-6-0s of classes ‘K1’, ‘K2’ and ‘K4’. What we really need is a new-build, sidewindow cab ‘K2’! John Barrance, by email It was Dave Clucas, not George Clucas, who died on April 30 (SR480, page 16). Dr Jon Tyler, by email
