‘County’ No. 1014 County of Glamorgan is unlikely to run on the main line unless narrower cylinders are cast. Although the Great Western Society’s Hawksworth 4‑6‑0 is being constructed to main line standards, and will be within Network Rail height limits (SR478), its outside cylinders are expected to be out of gauge for most routes.

David Bradshaw, press officer for the GW County Project, said: “We’re not ruling it out for the future – but with the completion of Pendennis Castle, and a quick overhaul expected for

King Edward II, the GWS will not have the resources to handle three main line‑certified engines. “Realistically, the 8ft 11in width of the ‘County’s’ cylinders will make main line operation difficult, and casting new ones would be a step too far at this point.” However, he added, No. 1014 will regularly visit steam railways. “We don’t just want it running up and down the demonstration line at Didcot – any preserved line will be welcome to hire it.”

It is hoped that Heritage Boiler Steam Services will finish the construction of No. 1014’s boiler, combining the firebox of ex‑Barry ‘8F’ No. 48518 (overhauled at LNWR Crewe) with a new boiler barrel, although contracts are still to be signed.

Work on the ‘County’ boiler, funded by the £125,000 ‘Boiler Club’ (SR481), would commence once HBSS has completed the boiler for ‘Patriot’ No. 5551 The Unknown Warrior.

The ‘County’s’ smokebox door has been made, while the smokebox, its saddle, and front and rear rings, will be ordered imminently.
