563: Work on the boiler of the former National Collection ‘T3’ has slowed at the Flour Mill owing to staff holidays and construction of a replacement boiler for Polish ‘TKp’ 0-8-0T No. 5485. However, an examiner has been appointed to carry out ultrasonic testing of the LSWR 4-4-0’s wheels and axles, and the Swanage Railway Trust has obtained a quote of £28,000 for repairs to the tender tank, although this figure will increase to take account of the chassis overhaul as well. Details of the ongoing appeal can be found at www.swanagerailwaytrust.org/ t3-appeal

4555: The bottom half of the Dartmouth Steam Railway’s ‘Small Prairie’ is complete at Churston, with the valve timing set and the tanks temporarily in place while replacement lubrication and injector pipework is formed. At Tyseley, the two new boiler barrel sections are expected to be riveted to the firebox shortly. 4920: Since it was extracted from the isolated siding at Buckfastleigh in April (SR479), Dumbleton Hall has received a repair to one of its tender springs to ensure that it can be moved when necessary, although the tender will require a full chassis overhaul and a replacement tank. The Collett 4-6-0 does not yet have a firm position in the South Devon Railway’s overhaul queue, but the Dumbleton Hall Preservation Society has begun fund-raising and is seeking new members for £17 per year – for details, email the membership secretary at john.keohane1@btopenworld.com 4930: Assessment of Hagley Hall’s driving and bogie wheels at South Devon Railway Engineering has confirmed that new tyres are not required; the existing tyres have

been reprofiled. At the locomotive’s Severn Valley Railway base, the bogie frame has been dismantled for overhaul and sections of the frames have been removed for replacement around the rear dragbox. Its replacement cylinder castings (see SR482) are expected to be machined towards the end of the year, along with those for Dinmore Manor Locomotive Ltd’s ‘2884’ 2-8-0 No. 3850 which were produced at the same time. Donations towards the Collett 4-6-0’s overhaul can be made by texting ‘HALL29’ and £amount to 70070. Funds are being raised by the Friends of Locomotive 4930 Hagley Hall, whose website is at www.4930hagleyhall.org.uk

5239: The axleboxes are being trial-fitted into the frames of the Dartmouth Steam Railway’s ‘5205’ 2-8-0T ‘Goliath’ following whitemetalling and machining, as its contract overhaul by the East Somerset Railway progresses towards re-wheeling. The new front dragbox has also been riveted into the frames, while the frame of the front pony truck has been shotblasted and repainted, and the outside of the boiler needle-gunned to remove corrosion.
