Andrew Barclay 0-4-0F Works No. 1952 of 1928, Shell Refining Co. No. 8: Britain’s only working fireless locomotive put in its last public turn of 2018 on September 23. The Scottish Industrial Railway Centre at Dunaskin operates the locomotive on only a handful of occasions each year, charging the steam reservoir from their convention­al Barclay 0-4-0ST, National Coal Board No. 10. Operating days for 2019 have yet to be announced.

Fletcher Jennings 0-4-0T Works No. 158 of 1877 Captain Baxter: After an extended spell working at Didcot, Captain Baxter returned to its home at the Bluebell Railway on September 20. The ex-Dorking Greystone lime works engine is approachin­g the end of its current boiler certificat­e, and its final steamings before retirement are set to be publicised. The locomotive has only been in occasional use at the Bluebell since returning to action in 2010. Hudswell Clarke 0-6-0T Manchester Ship Canal No. 70 (Works No. 1464): The firebox of this 1921-built locomotive has been removed for overhaul at the Swindon & Cricklade Railway.

Kerr Stuart 0-4-0WT Works No. 3063 of 1918: ‘Willy the Well Tank’, as it is known, returned to action at the Chasewater Railway’s gala weekend on September 8/9, having not been used since the last such event. On an extended visit, the locomotive worked alongside a pair of Bagnall 0-4-0STs – long-term visitor Kent Electric Power Company No. 2 (Works No. 2842 of 1946) and long-term resident Dunlop No. 6. The latter carried the identity of scrapped sibling Ketton Portland Cement No. 3, which it first wore during the Ketton Cement Works 90th anniversar­y celebratio­ns in June (SR482). Peckett 0-6-0ST Works No. 1970 of 1939 Ashington No. 5:

The ‘OX1’ Class locomotive took part in the steam gala at the National Railway Museum’s Locomotion site in Shildon during September 22/23. The ex-Ashington Coal Company machine was making a rare trip away from its long-term base at the North Tyneside Steam Railway, where it is currently the sole resident example of working steam motive power.

Andrew Barclay 0-4-0ST Works No. 2284 of 1949, National Coal Board No. 21: Currently on display at the National Mining Museum, Scotland, at Lady Victoria Colliery in Newtongran­ge, the former Dalmelling­ton Barclay is reportedly due to be replaced by Andrew Barclay 0-6-0ST No. 3 (Works No. 1458 of 1916) which worked at Lady Victoria Colliery. The latter locomotive is currently being cosmetical­ly restored by the Scottish Railway Preservati­on Society ahead of a long-term loan.
