THE HARZ MOUNTAINS
Travel through the Harz Mountains, the highest range in northern Germany, by train on scenic journeys including the Brocken Railway, through spruce woodland and narrow valleys.
Day 1. To Wernigerode
Meet at our Departure Office in London St Pancras before taking the Eurostar to Brussels. Continuing from here, via Cologne, to Hanover by high-speed rail, before transferring by coach to Wernigerode.
Days 2-3. Wernigerode & Goslar
Embark on a guided tour of Wernigerode today, seeing the instantly recognisable Wernigerode Castle sat upon a forested hill and looking down over the town below. Discover the town’s history and more before taking time at leisure. Enjoy a guided walking tour of Goslar on Day 3, a historic city which is now a UNESCO World Heritage site and is home to 1,500 buildings dating from the 15th to the 19th centuries. After the revealing tour, you have some free time.
Day 4. Brocken Railway
Today enjoy a steam-hauled train trip from Wernigerode on the Brocken Railway. First opened in 1898, the route takes you through the stunning scenery of the Upper Harz National Park to the peak of Brocken, the Harz region’s highest mountain. The fantastic viewpoint at the Brocken summit allows for some glorious views across the mountains below.
Day 5. Quedlinburg
Your excursion today is to the beautifully preserved town of Quedlinburg, where you are free to explore at your own pace. With hundreds of half-timbered buildings, this alluring town is a UNESCO World Heritage site and is a delight to explore. Why not climb up to Quedlinburg’s castle, with its twin spires, arched courtyard and views out over the town and surrounding area?
Day 6. Wernigerode to London
Today you take a coach to Hanover, where you join the high-speed train, via Cologne, to Brussels. Here, connect with the Eurostar service back to London St Pancras. 2019 departures follow a different itinerary. Please call for details.
