THANK YOU FOR THE 60009 MEMORIES, JOHN

I would like to take this opportunity to thank Steam Railway for the very fitting tribute to John Cameron and his ‘A4’ locomotive ‘Number Nine’ (SR506).

While I have never met John Cameron he has, nevertheless, figured large in my railway interests for virtually the whole of my adult life. While there are other surviving ‘A4s’, for those of us that witnessed them in BR days, John Cameron has religiously maintained his in a condition that allowed us to relive old times on every occasion we saw it out on the main line. Of course, I am saddened, as will be all ‘Number Nine’ devotees, at the decision to call it a day, but it’s fully understandable. What he and the ‘A4’ have achieved over the past 54 years has been truly remarkable and, in my view, quite heroic.

So a sincere thank you Mr Cameron for providing us with the unforgettable sight and sound of a BR green-liveried ‘A4’ for so many years.
