COMPARTMENT HAVEN
It is good to see that at least one train operator (Saphos Trains) is to install protective screens between seating bays to enable social distancing (SR506).
However, a simpler solution elsewhere might be to use as much compartment stock as possible, which would save the expense of providing the Perspex screens.
As mentioned in Comment, noncorridor compartment stock would
be even better as you would be completely isolated. A fair number of passengers visiting steam railways are in family groups who would sit together, so reasonable loadings should be possible.
However, the best way to maintain social distancing on steam trains would be to take a leaf out of the InterCity operators’ book and make reservations compulsory, at least for the time being.
This need not be a complicated process; a simple database would be all that is needed, and prospective passengers encouraged to book on-line. This would still work for walk-up passengers, as the booking clerk would issue a reservation with their tickets.
