Resident steam at Mountsorrel as locomotive sales rise

-

ANDREW BARCLAY 0-4-0ST ‘Colin McAndrew’ has become the first resident steam locomotive at the Mountsorrel Railway.

Formerly privately owned and based at Chasewater for more than 50 years, the 1911-built engine has been sold to Mountsorrel & Rothley Heritage Centre and arrived at the quarry branch off the Great Central Railway on October 27.

Several other industrial locomotives are for sale, including two other Andrew Barclay 0-4-0STs on eBay: 1924-built Chemicals and 1935-built Tom Parry, currently at the Pontypool & Blaenavon Railway, were advertised on the internet auction site in late October.

Chemicals, later known as Harry (Works No. 1823), attained notoriety when it left the Yorkshire Dales Railway and returned to semi-commercial use at Crossley Evans scrapyard in Shipley during the early 1980s.

Offers over £15,000 are invited for Harry, while Tom Parry is listed at just £5,000 in its dismantled state.

A third Barclay 0-4-0ST, ‘Alexander’ (Works No. 1865 of 1926), is for sale at the Ribble Steam Railway, where it last ran in the late 1990s. It is complete with vacuum brake and steam heat equipment, but requires an overhaul.

Hawthorn Leslie 0-4-0ST Blyth Harbour Commission No. 2 and Hudswell Clarke 0-6-0T No. 65 have been put on the market by the same owner. The 1912-built Hawthorn Leslie last worked at Chatham Historic Dockyard, where it was named ‘Achilles’, and requires an overhaul.

The Hudswell Clarke was built as an 0-6-0ST for Stewarts & Lloyds in 1929 but rebuilt as a side tank in preservation. It last ran at the Derwent Valley Light Railway. Both locomotives are understood to be at Tyseley.

Andrew Barclay 0-4-0 crane tank Glenfield also remains on the market.
