Nurses were said to always lend a listening ear and housekeeping staff were noted for their lovely smiles and their real care for patients.

One patient remarked that everyone does their job with all their heart.

The team is led by consultatnt cardiologist Catherine Labinjoh and senior charge nurse Carolyn Probert.

Carolyn said: “Coming from the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, this award is not only significant but also very special to us.”

The William Cullen Prize is designed to recognise excellence in teaching or service innovation at a regional level and will be awarded annually.

William Cullen, who lived between 1710 and 1790, was the most influential medical lecturer of his generation and drew thousands of students to the Edinburgh Medical School.

As the pre-eminent Scottish medical figure of his day, Cullen’s opinion was in high demand and people wrote to him from around the world requesting his advice on treatments.
