Ladies clock up first win in East top flight
Waverley win lifts Bridge of Allan off foot of the table
Bridge of Allan ladies squash team have celebrated creating a little bit of history after recording their first ever victory in the East of Scotland Ladies Division One at Waverley.
The Richardson and Starlingsponsored girls enjoyed their big night out in Edinburgh by posting an emphatic 4-1 success to lift them off the foot of the table ahead of next Monday’s crunch encounter with title favourites Edinburgh Sports Club One, at Minewood.
Skipper Sheena Logan, who posted an impressive four-set victory, was ecstatic about her side’s win.
“It was great to get the first win of the season as we felt that we had been unlucky in our previous two fixtures,” said Sheena.
“At No 1 Sabine Mackenzie was her usual commanding self to win in straight sets and Karen Roberston stepped in at No 3 and really showed the benefit of the all the extra training she has been putting in of late with a very strong performance.
“Although young Eilidh Mackenzie went down in straight sets at No 4 she will benefit hugely from another tough first division match against an experienced opponent.
“That left Clare Woodward to produce the performance of the night, coming from two sets to one down to win 15-11 in the fifth, with a tremendously brave display on her debut.”
Elsewhere the men’s firsts, sponsored by Richardson and Starling, claimed a 4-1 victory at Colinton Castle. At No 1 Scott Mosely was in majestic form to claim a four set victory while Iain Logan and Robin Bairner also posted impressive successes in straight and four sets respectively.
But the performance of the night came from Scotland under 17 girls’ No 1 Emma Fitzsimmons, who was a late call-up to the men’s team, and produced a hugely gutsy display to claim a fifth set tie-break 13-11.
With no game this week due to the Edinburgh October break, skipper Bairner is delighted with his side’s start to the campaign.
He said: “It was vital we backed up the win over defending champions Grange with another win and despite being weakened by unavailability due to the Stirling October break we have done that and in no small part that is due to Emma’s fantastic win.”
Tonight at Minewood the thirds, sponsored by Richardson and Starling, will host Galashiels in an encounter skipper Neil Mackenzie says is a must-win meeting.
Neil said: “We are level on points with Galashiels and the winner will have the chance to push up into mid-table while the loser will be hit badly by defeat.
“We have been improving with every match and now we must make the most of home advantage to claim our first victory.”
