Refuse system roll out is to be reviewed

Stirling Council is to conduct a review into the way in which the new waste collection system is being introduced.

It follows huge numbers of complaints from householde­rs and widespread confusion about when bins will be lifted.

Council Deputy Leader Neil Benny insisted the new system was here to stay and is convinced the service to householde­rs is improving.

But he acknowledg­ed he was continuing to receive complaints about the roll out and added : “The truth is the problems have been more significan­t than we thought they were going to be.

“It’s not worked out the way officers were hoping and we are going to have a full review to make sure we learn lessons and ensure the set-up is functionin­g as it should.

“I think we will continue to have complaints for the next couple of weeks as the system is not quite right yet.

“We are trying to introduce a new regime to 40,000 households while, at the same time, continuing emptying the refuse of those homes who are on the old system. That has proved really challengin­g.”

Councillor Benny said the review would be conducted internally and may be carried out by Alastair Brown, who has recently taken over from Robert Steenson as the council’s director of localities and infrastruc­ture.

Since September, council workers have been delivering to new homes another two wheelie bins: a blue one for recyclable­s and green one for paper and cardboard.
