Rent-a-hybrid car eco scheme

-

A new car hire scheme - which will let drivers borrow hybrid vehicles by the hour - has been launched in Stirling.

The initiative, backed by Stirling Council, is aimed at reducing the number of cars on the city’s streets.

Motorists will be able to register their licence details and then book cars which start at £5.50 per hour.

Drivers will access the vehicles by swiping a smart card, and the cost is inclusive of petrol - with a fuel card in each vehicle which can be used if the car requires refuelling.

They will then access the vehicles at pick-up points at Allan Park, Barnton Street, Cowane Street, Glebe Avenue, St Mary’s Wynd and Wallace Street.

The scheme will be run by hire firm Europcar’s subsidiary E-Car Club, which says it will offer a convenient, more environmentally-friendly alternative to owning a car.

E-Car Club’s Patrick Cresswell said: “The cars are affordable at £5.50 an hour, or up to £33 for 24 hours. The concept is aimed at a range of people, whether they are young drivers who face high insurance costs, or older people who may not need regular access to a car.”

Other locations where the scheme operates in Scotland include Inverness, Dundee Airport and Wick.
