Charity aims to recruit an elite squad of runners

CAB want marathon runners

- Gareth Jones

The race to take part in the Stirling Marathon is on.

The big event arrives in the city for the first time on May 21 of next year, and one Stirling charity is looking for runners.

The Stirling Citizens Advice Bureau is assembling a squad to take part in the marathon, as it looks to boost the funds it requires to offer free and impartial advice to hundreds of local people.

The organisation is looking for participants to raise at least £375 in sponsorship (charity places are available for £20), with fundraising advice and support from experienced marathon runners provided.

The CAB has resolved over 14,000 issues and generates £2.8 million for the local area annually, but relies on charitable support to ensure that it can provide an array of services: from poverty alleviation to advice for victims of domestic abuse.

The organisations see the marathon as a great opportunity to raise its profile in the local area, while helping runners meet their times or get fit.

The Stirling Scottish Marathon has been launched on the back of a resurgence in distance running in Scotland with Dunblane’s Andrew Butchart running in the 5000 metres in Rio and brothers Callum and Derek Hawkins joining Tsegai Tewelde in the marathon following their 1-2-3 finish as top Britons in April’s London Marathon.

The event, supported by Scottish Athletics and Stirling Council, will start at Blair Drummond Safari Park, taking in Doune Castle and Bridge of Allan before finishing beneath the ramparts of Stirling Castle.

After an undulating first five miles, the remainder of the course will be fast and suitable for all abilities from elite runners to first time joggers.

The location and route of the marathon will be used to reinforce the #ComeHomeToRun proposition to encourage ex-pats, and tourists throughout the UK, Europe and across the globe to come to Scotland.
