Football Trip Following on from the trip to the Etihad Stadium in September, Mr Johnstone is now looking to take a group to Old Trafford to see Manchester United take on Liverpool in the New Year. Any pupil interested in going should see Mr Johnstone for a permission slip. Football Success Well done to the S1 boys football team who beat Stirling High 6-1 last week. Goal scorers were Cameron Conway, Marc Cooper, Leyton Connell (2), Arran Ward and Conal Philliben. Taekwon-Do Huge congratula­tions to Rachel Burns (S1) who won bronze for Taekwon-Do sparring at the internatio­nal Chang-Ung Cup at the weekend. Diary Dates Thursday, November 10 - S5/6 Parents Night; Thursday, November 24 - Inset Day; Friday, November 25 - Inset Day. Henderson (S5). The team will complete various team exercises including team relays and problem solving against other schools. The challenge will test pupil’s mathematic ability and confidence within maths. S1 Maths - Numeracy Passport To highlight the importance of numeracy skills both across the curriculum and in daily life, S1 pupils were all issued with a Numeracy Passport. Pupils were asked to complete their passports each time they used their numeracy skills, and the winners were recently announced by the maths department: Sophie Lafferty, Evie McKenzie, Daniel Mackin, Tom McKay, Katie Smith and Oliwia Rzeszotars­ka Maths Problem of the Month Well done to the winners of this month’s maths problem: Mrs Crawford from Design and Engineerin­g and Ben Yarrow (S3). Scottish Youth Poetry Slam S3 English students recently completed a national poetry slam in Glasgow. The group, led by Mrs Pirie, had performed brilliantl­y throughout the competitio­n, comfortabl­y winning the semi-final to reach the final held at the Beacon Centre in Port Glasgow. The team finished second in the national final, losing marginally to Port Glasgow, the hosts of the event. Shona Laverty, Aimee Kyle, Ellie McFarlane and Freya Walker delivered ‘Is that True’ and won the group prize for their efforts. Rob Gilmour achieved second place in the individual poem after reciting the powerful poem “Black Lives Matter”. This event was the first Scottish Poetry Slam and was a huge success, hopefully creating future opportunit­ies for the programme and its participan­ts. Duke of Edinburgh Silver Award Wallace High School’s Silver Duke of Edinburgh candidates completed their three-day practice expedition on Friday, October 7. The expedition took place in the Aberfoyle area with students utilising their orienteeri­ng skills to navigate successful­ly. Students carried their equipment which included personal and collective items. The group was divided into three walking groups and camped in smaller groups of three and four. The silver award is split into four sections which must be completed with supporting evidence. The four sections are: volunteeri­ng, skill, physical and expedition. Over the course of the school year, candidates will complete a practice and an assessed expedition. The skill section must be completed over three months while the physical and volunteeri­ng sections must be completed over six months. Members must complete two out of three sections to take part in the practice expedition. Senior Football The senior football team progressed in the Scottish Cup after winning 2-0 against Our Lady’s High School. An Aaron McKinlay strike and an own goal gave Wallace the win, enabling them to advance into the next round where they face Grangemout­h High School. S5/S6 Personal Developmen­t they have PE kit, Home Economics tubs, lunch money, musical instrument­s, lunch card, locker keys, timetable, school bags, pens, pencils when they arrive at school in the morning. Can parents/carers please also ensure that all school uniform is marked clearly with your child’s name, in particular school blazers. There is a number of blazers with no names on them making it very difficult to reunite them with their owner. Winter Fete The parent council, staff and pupils are running a winter fete on Saturday, November 19 from 11am-3pm in Stirling High School. Junk Kouture Fashion Show To get the hottest seats in town buy your tickets from SHS Art Dept. or the school office. Tickets are now on sale - £5. Reminder to all pupils taking part in Junk Kouture Club it is on every lunchtime and Thursday after school. Fashion show takes place on Wednesday, December 7 at 7pm. After the talk, pupils put on clean suits so they could visit the clean rooms which house £32 million worth of machines including the electron beam lithograph­y tool, dry etching machines, electron microscope­s and machines for manipulati­ng plasma and atoms. Throughout the tour, Beaconhurs­t scholars saw many students at work including a PhD student working on nanotechno­logy to reduce energy loss in cars. They learned that the James Watt Institute is used by hundreds of students daily for research into nanotechno­logy and applicatio­ns of nanotechno­logy and is truly a world-leading institute in its field. Tennis Final The girls’ tennis squad will be in Sunderland next week for the North of Britain final of the British Tennis Schools Championsh­ip. The team reached the final after winning the Scottish round of the contest in September when they decisively beat rivals Strathalla­n School in every match. The winning team was made up of captain Jodie McLelland, Abbie Kerr, Kirsty Robertson and Rosie Sterk with Maia Montgomeri­e and Cora Erskine as reserves. Beaconhurs­t will be up against teams from three North of England schools in the next round on Thursday, November 17. If they win that leg, they will then head to the national final of the prestigiou­s UK-wide contest in Bolton, Lancashire next month. Open Day The school is hosting an Open Afternoon tomorrow (Thursday) to give prospectiv­e families a chance to see Beaconhurs­t in action. The event takes place between 2.30pm and 4.30pm with guided tours around the school as pupils and staff go about their normal business. There will also be opportunit­y to speak with members of the Senior Leadership Team, Heads of Department, teachers and pupils.
