Let’s celebrate our very own poster boy

Andy Murray has sealed his position as the number one player in the world.

And to mark the Dunblane tennis star’s achievements, we are today giving away a free glossy poster - sponsored by Prestige Bathroom and Tile Centre - of Britain’s first player to gain the top ranking.

The 29-year-old has attracted praise from across the world since securing the ranking at the weekend, and proud mum Judy told the Observer that it was the result of years of hard work put in by both Andy and brother Jamie who also achieved world number one status in men’s doubles.

She said: “It’s really incredible to think that Dunblane has produced two world number ones in tennis in the same year. Jamie achieved the top spot in doubles in April and Andy’s been rewarded for his most consistent and successful year to date by passing Novak Djokovic in the singles rankings.

“I know how hard Andy has worked and what he has sacrificed over many years to get to the top and it’s a reward for his resilience, patience and perseverance in the strongest era ever in men’s tennis.”

Alan Christie, a former president of the Scottish Lawn Tennis Association who helped coach Andy as a youth, said that the star stood out from a young age.

“One of his characteristics was that he always had such a desire to win,” said Alan. “It didn’t matter what level he was playing at. There were some situations that I wouldn’t want to repeat! But he has gone and played a long way from home and shown that will to win.

“He has been a fighter all his life and it is a superb achievement.”
