Clubbers get a chance to Phreak out at Fubar

- Gareth Jones

An annual concert is returning on Saturday, November 19.

This year, Callander’s Rusty String’s Concert will be enhanced by the appearance of the Callander Kirk Junior Choir, directed by Linda Cantlay. The choir is a lively group of happy, talented children with a very varied repertoire. They have a unique sound and are set to be very entertaining.

A popular Stirling club night is set to be relaunched next weekend.

Stirling-based club brand Phreakunique will re-create their legendary Subliminal Saturdays house night at the Fubar from next Saturday (November 19), with special guests K-KLASS flying in from London to perform.

The monthly club night was originally launched two and a half years ago at Eva Nightclub, Bridge of Allan and quickly became the area’s hottest dance event, welcoming guests from all over the UK and as far afield as Ibiza. After moving on from their last venue, which they felt wasn’t big enough to host their events due to high demand, they were very excited to hear the Fubar were interested in joining forces, and snapped up the chance to perform at the city centre venue.

The club brand was launched over 12 years ago when owner/promoter John Devlin moved on from his residency at the Fubar and decided to set up his own club brand with good friend and DJ partner Bob Mitchell.

Since Phreakunique was born, it has established a firm footprint in the club scene and the duo have gone onto to successfully organise a whole host of events all over Scotland - from boat parties on the Clyde and at South Queensferry to Ibiza themed club nights in Glasgow and Edinburgh.

After returning from Ibiza this summer, where John and Bob supported Take That’s Howard Donald and superstar DJ Tom Starr at an exclusive party for Colours at Ocean Beach Club, they returned

Rusty Strings was formed in order to give people whose musical technique was‘rusty’ or fairly elementary, a chance to play with like-minded people. Nine years on, they sound a little less rusty!

The event is directed by Jean Thewlis with the help of husband Ron and one or two more experienced friends.

The concert is in aid of Fabb, an home to release their first ever track “Attracted to You” for the Soulful Legends house label, which is based in Las Vegas.

Both DJs can also be found presenting their very own fortnightly radio show on Groove City Radio in Glasgow and recently on Stirling City Radio on Friday evenings.

John said: “We are delighted to kick off our monthly residency at the Fubar, with some very exciting guests planned in for future Subliminal events.”

Following on from their own success, Phreakunique have just become the proud sponsors of local Muay Thai fighter Callum “the Fighting Irish” Bonner. The 18-year-old steps into the ring this coming Saturday (November 12) to a sold-out show at the Cochrane Hall in Alva against tough East Kilbride opponent Darryl McIndoe for the Scottish Superfly Weight title.

Callum’s coach Brian Stevenson said: “We have been training for this fight over the last eight weeks, from pad sessions in the gym to early morning runs as well as a training camp session in Liverpool.”

Callum will also be joined by a whole host of other local talent who train at the MXP Gym in Stirling, including Cowie’s Kieran McCormack, Stuart Duchart, Brian ”Blitz” McKinlay, Cambusbarron’s very own Jamie “the Hitman” Harron and Raploch fighters Brian Lee McKinlay and Scott McAvoy.

Tickets for Subliminal event at The Fubar Club can be purchased at www.skiddle.com organisation which helps disabled children to experience activities, such as cycling, swimming and hillwalking. The charity have recently bought the former Invertrossachs Tryst hostel in Callander - an ideal centre for them.
