Castle get the job Doune with cup win

Rovers scalp sees team snap up fourth round spot

- Sports reporter

Doune Castle ..... 5 Rothie Rovers .... 1 Doune Castle swept into the Scottish Amateur Cup fourth round draw with an impressive performance at Moray Park on Saturday.

Two first-half goals settled the home nerves and although the Aberdeenshire side - buoyed by their large travelling support - fought hard, Castle were always in control.

The visitors started well and Doune full-back Jacob Macaloney had to make a goal-line clearance after only two minutes.

That stunned Castle into action and they took the lead in 11 minutes with a stunning goal.

Paul Statter moved the ball forward to Chris Ogilvie who drove at the heart of the Rothie defence before sweeping the ball wide to Sean Heaver.

Heaver then drifted past a couple of Rovers players before unleashing a rocket of a shot that flew high into the top right hand corner. Within seconds, Doune made it 2-0. Niall McClure threaded the ball through the middle and Ogilvie managed to beat the keeper and a defender before netting from four yards.

Alan More and Dylan McGowan both had efforts which hit the post as Doune dominated possession but Rothie were still dangerous and Macaloney made his second goal-line clearance of the match acrobatically volleying clear to preserve Doune’s lead.

Five minutes into the second half, Doune killed off the tie with goal number three.

McClure split the defence with a fine ball to Heaver who calmly brought the ball under control before slotting the ball into the far corner.

A resolute Rothie forced their way back into the game and gained a brief lifeline after 57 minutes, netting from the penalty spot.

Doune made it 4-1 after 69 minutes with a quite brilliant goal.

Heaver received the ball wide 25 yards out, cut inside the full back, beat four more and as the keeper advanced, he cut the ball back to Colin Burke to knock the ball into the empty net.

Heaver and Burke combined again after 78 minutes to ease Doune 5-1 ahead. The former’s cross was hit by the latter off the bar - before latching on to the rebound.

This was an impressive Doune performance as they disposed of the challenge of a strong Rothie Rovers side. Kenny Feaks and Graham McClymont formed an impenetrable barrier at the heart of the home defence, time after time, dispelling attacks when the away side did drive forward.

Doune’s attacking flair and pace in midfield and attack were ultimately decisive, securing the Castle a much deserved place in the next round of the cup
