Walter’s winning ways create history

No substitute for experience as call-up pays off

the way to a 4-1 win for the BofA Dirtrackers.

But the modest McAllister was keen to play down his outstanding effort: “It was nice to get the call to help out the seconds as I felt I had been playing well for the thirds in division five but after the opening game lasting almost 20 minutes I was beginning to have my doubts!” admitted a puffed Walter. He continued: “But sometimes there is no substitute for a bit of experience and particularly in the fifth set I felt like that gave me a little edge.

“I don’t know about making history but I hope that I did well enough to maybe stay in contention for another call up if the seconds are struggling.”

With skipper Martin Jack, Scotland under-17 international James Dougan and number three Doug Curtis all winning, Stewart Penman was unlucky to go down after four tight sets, including two see-sawing tiebreaks, as the seconds stay third just 19 points off the pace with a game in hand in the division three title race ahead of tonight’s trip to Dalgety Bay 3.

Meanwhile,BofA firsts got back to winning ways on the road with a 5-0 thrashing of division one relegation favourites Linlithgow with Roddy Campbell the only man to drop a game at number two.

Next up for the Minewood firsts is tomorrow night’s visit of fourth placed Dalgety Bay 1 and skipper Robin Bairner is determined to build on the crushing of Linlithgow.

The BofA thirds are also at home when they host Colinton Castle fifths tonight with skipper Neil Mackenzie desperate for points after his side were consigned to bottom spot following last week’s break.

He said: “With Ross Waddell maturing and improving each week and Walter (McAllister) and Stewart (Penman) both playing really well after making the step up to the seconds last week, we feel we are in really good shape going into this one. But we need a win, that’s the bottom line.”

Elsewhere the BofA Ladies side head to Edinburgh University after almost upsetting Ladies Division One leaders Edinburgh Sports Club 2.

Skipper Sheena Logan and number one Sabine MacKenzie both won but straight sets setbacks for Louise Hunter, Clare Woodward and Allison Penman saw the early promise come to nothing, leaving Sheena to reflect: “Taking two ties off the leaders is a solid performance and I thought that Louise, Clare and Allison all did really well against experienced opposition. Hopefully we can go one better at Edinburgh Uni.”
