Workers meet for Brexit chat

-

EU nationals living and working in rural areas got the chance to air concerns over Brexit to Stirling MP Steven Paterson in Tyndrum.

Mr Paterson held a meeting at The Real Food Cafe in the village, which employs around 30 members of staff – many of whom are EU nationals and have concerns about what the prospect of Brexit could mean to them.

The MP spoke to staff and responded to questions on how Brexit could affect their status. He reaffirm his commitment to protecting their right to live and work in Scotland.

Mr Paterson said:“It was great to be able to meet with staff from the Real Food Café – just one example of many employers who benefit hugely from the contribution made by EU nationals across the Stirling constituency.

“Understandably, many people have serious questions over how Brexit will affect their right to live and work in the place they call home. In the immediate aftermath of the UK Brexit vote, I wrote to both the then-Prime Minister and Home Secretary calling for EU nationals to be protected in negotiations. So far, no commitment has been made and it cannot be the case that people in our local communities are to be used as bargaining chips by a Tory UK Government without a plan.

“I will continue to call on the UK Government to apply a more humane approach to their Brexit negotiations – which would include immediately securing the rights of EU nationals living in Stirling, Scotland, and the wider UK.”
