Piping star plays Dollar Academy
Award-winning Fred Morrison on tour
Piping great Fred Morrison is set to perform at Dollar Academy next week.
Whether playing the Highland pipes, the Scottish smallpipes or reelpipes, the Irish uilleann pipes and even the whistle, Fred is renowned as one of Scotland’s most remarkable piping talents.
And on Tuesday, November 29, he is coming to Dollar Academy to perform. The concert will be held in the Gibson Auditorium at 7pm.
The concert at Dollar is part of his winter tour and as an added bonus, the Juvenile Band will be opening the night.
Dollar Academy piping instructor Matt Wilson said: “Fred Morrison is a real crowdpleaser and the opportunity to see him perform live is not to be missed.”
Born and raised near Glasgow, Fred Morrison was drawn to the celebrated Gaelic piping tradition of his father’s native South Uist, in the outer Hebrides. It is this tradition that is said to form the bedrock of his intensely expressive, uniquely adventurous style. His outstanding technical prowess saw him winning many top competition prizes while still at school.
He enjoyed a record-breaking seventh victory in the 2004 Macallan Trophy competition at the Lorient Festival in Brittany. His composition was played to open the 2005 Celtic Connections festival, and he has performed and recorded with many of the industry’s greats.
He was also one of the first Scottish artists to forge links with Celtic connections in Brittany and north-west Spain, adding further to his repertoire of influences and tunes, and he has long been renowned as an outstanding tune composer.
His latest album project also looks beyond Scotland. Outlands explores the connections between his own Scottish tradition and that which was exported to the southern American states: bluegrass.
Mr Wilson added: “The concert at Dollar promises to be a night of remarkable, Scottish musical talent. This is a fantastic opportunity for our kids to witness such a talent live. I myself am quite excited.”
All are welcome to attend. Tickets are available at the door for £12 and £10 concession, while pupils will enjoy a reduced ticket price of £8.
