Jamie serves up No.1 double act

Season of success with Bruno Soares

- Gareth Jones

This year could have been all so different for Jamie Murray.

Less than four years ago, the older Murray brother considered giving up the sport as he struggled to find a regular doubles partner.

However Jamie’s form picked up when he started playing with regular partner John Peers, which culminated in them reaching the Wimbledon final.

He started the year by teaming up with talented Brazilian Bruno Soares, and the new team gelled immediately when they won the Australian Open in January.

Following the defeat of Marcelo Melo at the Miami Masters, Murray became the new world number one elect, and overtook Melo at the top of the rankings on April 4.

He was given a hero’s welcome when he returned to Dunblane later that month with the Davis Cup he had helped win in 2015.

The 30-year-old was given an OBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours list for his services to sport and charity, and said he had never expected to receive such an award.

A win in the US Open followed in the summer, with Murray and Soares defeating the Spanish pair Pablo Carreño Busta and Guillermo García-López.

The pair cruised through the early rounds of the ATP Masters Finals but were beaten in the semi-finals, however their record throughout the season meant they left the O2 Arena with the title of number one doubles team for the year.
