Pupils enjoy Mexico ‘trip’ from comfort of their desks

-

Pupils at a Stirling secondary school travelled 5300 miles – without leaving their desks.

The S1 youngsters from Bannockburn High School went on a virtual‘field trip’to Mexico City.

Whilst there, they enjoyed some of the city’s key attractions such as the Plaza de las Tres Culturas (Square of Three Cultures) and the Museo Dolores Olmedo.

The experience was made possible by art and design teachers Alan McCluskey and Claire Graham who invited representatives of Google Expeditions to the school.

Google Expeditions provide a virtual reality app that allows pupils to view content through hi-tech devices using 3D technology.

The app was developed with a number of partners including Twig, TES, David Attenborough, production company Alchemy VR, the Royal Collection Trust and many of the Google Cultural Institute museum partners, to create educational content. Jennifer Holland, Google expeditions programme manager, was delighted the pupils enjoyed the experience and said: “(The device) provides a unique opportunity for supplemental learning by giving students new ways of exploring the concepts and places they are studying.

Mr McCluskey added:“The pupils fully engaged with the project, describing it as‘amazing’, ‘best day ever’and‘an excellent experience.’”
