Drama in the hills...

Injured walker is rescued

- Gareth Jones

Emergency services worked together to help an injured walker in the hills.

A 999 call was made after a man injured his ankle and hit his head while out on Dumyat on Thursday (December 8).

Police and an ambulance attended at the car park at Blairlogie off the A91 Hillfoots Road, alongside the Ochils Mountain Rescue Team, who were called out around lunchtime.

A police spokesperson said they were responding to concerns about the safety of a man who was thought to be walking in the area.

After an extensive search of the area involving two helicopters, the walker — who is in his 60s and from Stirling — was located at around 3pm on one of the less popular routes on the hill.

The man, found in the Ewe Liars/Castle Law area, was said to have fallen some distance and suffered a head wound and a broken ankle.

Mountain rescue team leader Kevin Mitchell said the man had taken some time to locate because of the many “nooks, crannies and gullies” in the area.

He was spotted by a Coastguard helicopter who then lowered a medic to help him.

Three OMRT members subsequently arrived, two having been brought up by helicopper from further down the hill.

“The man had hurt his ankle quite badly and also had a nasty wound to the head,” said Mitchell. “He was talking to the team members, who gave him some treatment.

“He wasn’t on the main route up Dumyat, it was one of the smaller routes. He slipped and it was just one of those things really.”

The man was bandaged up by the medics then lifted into the helicopter and taken to hospital for treatment.
