Bridge of Allan kids enjoy magic of books

-

Bridge of Allan Primary pupils enjoyed a trip to learn about reading and books.

They called in at WH Smith in Stirling on Monday as part of the Reluctant Reader Initiative.

The scheme aims to introduce local schools to books that are friendly to those with dyslexia, and readers of all abilities.

“It is very important that all children have access to books,”said WH Smith manager Gary Torrance.

“The majority of WH Smith stores across Scotland and down south take part in the initiative. We just want to give a little back to the schools. The kids had a brilliant time and went away with some new books.”

Bridge of Allan headteacher Lina Horsburgh said the school is always looking at different ways to get pupils to enjoy reading.

“It’s about getting the children hooked,”she said.“It’s not that they can’t read, it is about finding something that interests them. Through audiobooks or reading books loud to the children, such as class novels, children often become engaged in the story line and are then keen to follow a particular author. This spurs them on to read books for themselves. JK Rowling is an excellent example.

“If adults/teachers are passionate about books and spend time reading to/with children they really enjoy the magic stories can bring.”
