Jubilee Club spreads a little cheer

Christmas lunches are a tasty treat

- Kaiya Marjoribanks

The Jubilee Lunch Club at Allan Park South Church soon celebrates a milestone of its own - its first birthday in January.

However, before reaching its 12 month marker, the growing band of club members and volunteers got into the festive spirit recently for its first Christmas Party.

The party was held with support from Waitrose, who also provided extra volunteers on the day.

Jubilee Lunch Club spokesperson Julie Christie said: “Waitrose has provided so much support for us through their ‘Community Matters’ scheme.

“They have been wonderful in the support they have given us this year and their scheme to combat isolation is funding our Christmas party.

“They are even helping us on the day with additional volunteers.”

The Jubilee Lunch Club was set up at Allan Park South Church with the aim of celebrating the importance of older people living within communities in Stirling, to enjoy their company and share lunch with them within a safe, warm environment.

The club especially likes to welcome older people who live on their own and aims to develop activities influenced by the sort of pastimes the group enjoys.

The club provides lunch for older people in the Pillar Hall within the church from noon until 2pm in a free weekly drop in service.

People are invited to donate £2.50 to cover costs, but only if they can afford it.

Family carers and people with early stage dementia who are still living at home are also welcome to join in the lunches and people don’t need to be a member of the church to come along, although spiritual support is available if requested.

“The lunch club also welcomes volunteers - its lifeblood - to welcome guests, help prepare and serve lunch, clear tables and provide a listening ear and companionship for those who attend” said Julie.

The club also aims to offer “reminiscence”, giving guests the chance to contribute their recollections to the group and share their personal accounts.

Julie added: “This can be made easier by the items such as old photos, music, books or crafts which help to bring back fond memories.

“We are especially interested in memorabilia from the late 1950s onwards and would welcome any items large or small which can help us to tell a story.

“From brooches, football cards to buttons, all would be welcome and useful for us.”

Anyone who would like more information about attending the club, volunteering or who would like to donate items can call 07791 524504 or e-mail info@apschurch.com.
