Do you nose all you can about reindeers?
With the festive season in full swing and reindeer featuring on cards, in adverts and in some live displays, the Veterinary Deer Society (VDS) and British Veterinary Association (BVA) are issuing a festive challenge by launching an online “Who ‘nose’ the real facts about Rudolph?” quiz to see how much we really know about our famous red-nosed friend.
Reindeer originate from regions of the world with Arctic conditions so they have evolved to cope with harsh conditions and have specific welfare needs, particularly in warmer climates such as the UK.
Like all animals in the UK, reindeer are protected by the Animal Welfare Acts, which outline the five welfare needs that any animal owner has a legal responsibility to provide.
For reindeer, who are gregarious herd animals, this includes being kept in social groups and having an adequate area to roam.
For reindeer taking part in human-focused activities, like Christmas displays, owners should ensure their reindeer are comfortable with being transported and handled, and have adequate opportunity to rest during the event.
Dr Pete Goddard of the Veterinary Deer Society said:
“Rudolph the red-nosed reindeer is part of Christmas for all of us and we know people love to interact with reindeer at live displays, which can be fun and educational for everyone so long as the animals’ welfare needs come first.
“As vets we’d really like the UK public, who are well-known for their love of animals, to start thinking about reindeer all year round.
“After all, reindeer may not be pets, but they are still for life not just for Christmas.”
