tying his hands together with string and ignoring his cries that he was getting the police.

Mr Nicol added: “MacKenzie punched him twice to the face. He then demanded money and strong bags to put things in.”

His loot included £20 in cash and 10 packets of cigarettes. Mr Reid’s sister later arrived to find his home had been ransacked.

Video footage at the complex caught the attacker going into the flat and then leaving.

MacKenzie was later held by police and said he knew nothing about it – but was found with several packets of cigarettes he had taken.

He moaned to police: “That wasn’t a robbery. Why would I rob someone when there’s CCTV everywhere?”

Judge Lord Bonomy branded the crime “despicable, cowardly but frightening”.

He said the jail term would have been 12 years if it wasn’t for MacKenzie’s guilty plea.

Detective Constable Gavin Dingwall told the Observer:“This was a horrendous ordeal for the victim to suffer and we are pleased that the length of sentence reflects this.

“We do not tolerate violence in our communities and when incidents of this nature are reported to us we do everything in our power to investigate them thoroughly, identify the offenders and ultimately bring them to justice.”
