Time called at famous pubs

Sheriffmuir Inn and Old Bridge Inn close

- Gareth Jones

Two well-known Stirling area pubs have shut their doors.

The Sheriffmuir Inn, near Dunblane, and Bridge of Allan’s The Old Bridge Inn have both closed this month.

The two gastro pubs announced that they had called time in the last few days, and thanked regulars for their custom.

Rural pub The Sheriffmuir Inn, which overlooks the site of the Battle of Sheriffmuir in a 16th century building, shut after Hogmanay.

A phone message said that the owners were taking a few days off to spend time with children.

However on Wednesday night, a message on the pub’s Facebook site from owners Geoff and Moira Cook said that they were leaving after 11 years.

The statement said: “Due to our current financial position we G & M Cook LLP. have ceased trading at The Sheriffmuir Inn.

“Geoff, Moira and family would like to thank all their very loyal customers for the fun and adventures we have had over the last 11 years, it has been a riot.”

The pub gained publicity in the 1970s when former owners Andy and Maggie Robin welcomed Hercules the bear to the Inn.

Customers got used to seeing the 8ft 2in, 60st grizzly roaming about the glen or swimming in the loch before coming in for his meals.

Meanwhile, The Old Bridge Inn also shut its doors following Hogmanay celebrations.

The pub has been there for around 300 years, and recently received rewards from TripAdvisor.

Colleagues and friends Christopher Peck and Simon and Laura Kerr took on the venture in 2014, but announced the leasehold was being put up for
