Pedestrian dies days after being struck by van on A91

- Robert Fairnie

Police are still trying to piece together the events leading up to the death of a pedestrian on a Stirling road last week.

Sixto Lopez Moreno (35) passed away in hospital on Saturday evening after sustaining serious injuries when he was struck by a van on the A91 – between Manor Powis and Logie Kirk roundabouts – early in the morning of Monday, January 9.

Mr Moreno, who worked at the

Dunblane Hydro Hotel, had been enjoying a night out with work colleagues at the city’s Fubar nightclub on Sunday evening – but police are now attempting to figure out how he ended up on the A91 hours later.

The Spanish national, who lived in Dunblane but is originally from Cordoba, was struck by a white Mercedes Vito van which was travelling south towards Stirling near Powis Mains Farm at around 6am.

After sustaining serious injuries he was taken by ambulance to Western General Hospital in Edinburgh – where he passed away five days later.

Stirling Area Commander, chief inspector Lynn Ratcliff, said: “He had been at an event the evening before and was making his way home along a dark road. It’s a tragic set of circumstances for him, his family and the driver of the vehicle.

“The initial feedback was that his condition was not good but he began to improve over the weekend and his family were brought over from Spain. It was thought after surgery that he would survive.”

Following the accident the A91 was closed southbound at Logie Kirk roundabout and northbound at Manor Powis roundabout until around 11.30am as officers carried out investigations into the accident.

Police say that there was poor visibility on the road at the time of the incident as it was dark, there is no street lighting and weather conditions were poor. There’s also no pavement for pedestrians.

Sergeant Ruth Aitchison of Forth Valley’s Road Policing Unit is asking anyone who can help them in their investigation to get in touch.

She said: “Sixto very sadly passed away in the Western General on Saturday. We continue to investigate the circumstances of the collision and are providing support to his family at this difficult time.

“I would urge anyone who may have witnessed this incident, or who has information which can help and has not spoken to officers, to get in touch.”

Since his death a number of people have taken to social media to pay tribute to Mr Moreno who was described as a “lovely guy”.

And a spokesperson for his employers, DoubleTree by Hilton Dunblane Hydro, said: “We can sadly confirm that one of our team members passed away on Saturday evening. Our thoughts and condolences are with his family and friends at this very difficult time.”

Anyone with information should contact Police Scotland on 101.
