See Monte Carlo cars

- Robert Fairnie

Around 30 vintage vehicles taking part in a top rally are scheduled to stop off in Stirling next week.

The classic cars will set off for the south of France from Paisley Abbey on Wednesday (January 25) as they embark on the 2017 Monte Carlo Historique event.

After departing, the competitors will make their way to Stirling for a supper organised by Stirling and District Classic Car Club at The Birds and Bees in Causewayhead – their regular meeting place.

Phil Cavanagh, chairman of the club, is encouraging people to come along on the day to catch a glimpse of the cars arriving at around 8pm.

He said:“A number of our members have participated in the heritage runs in previous years but, as a club, we are honoured to play a part in such an historically important classic car event.”

The Observer reported last week that Alva man Gordon Best would be among those taking part in the event.

The 71-year-old, who is a member of Stirling and District Classic Car Club, is completing the challenge to honour a promise he made to his late wife Moira, who passed away after a battle with cancer last year.

Through his participation in the event he is aiming to raise cash for her two chosen causes – Strathcarron Hospice and Beatson Cancer Charity.
