Big day dream will come true

Generous locals help couple in race to get hitched after cancer diagnosis

- Gareth Jones

A couple who faced a race against time to get married celebrate their big day today (Friday).

Last month, we reported that Margaret Kerr and Roy Bennett were hoping to get married as quickly as possible after seven years together.

Arrangements had to be made hastily as Margaret was diagnosed with terminal pancreatic cancer in December.

And after a hectic few weeks of organisation, coupled with Margaret receiving treatment, the pair will be married this evening at Fallin Miners Welfare,

“I am really looking forward to it,” Margaret said yesterday. “We have got everything sorted and are very happy.”

The Fallin couple have been inundated with kind offers to help them have a special day.

Margaret’s dress was donated by Amilou Bridal, and Roy was given a shirt and suit from Slaters in Stirling.

“We really weren’t expecting to get the suit for nothing,” Margaret said.

“Roy had the money in his hand and was ready to pay when the staff said they would give it to us. I just started crying, and then all the staff started crying too!”

Fallin Miners Welfare, Beaverbrooks in Stirling, Toni & Guy, Party People, Beauty Box and St Clair’s Wedding Cars are amongst those who have donated their services.

And Michael R More’s Butchers in Cambusbarron will provide catering for 80 guests, with lots of Margaret’s family and friends set to turn out.

The couple have been taken aback by the generosity shown by companies, and other individuals with a crowdfunding campaign also having raised more than £1500.

Margaret said: “The generosity shown has been brilliant. I’ve got an appointment at the Beatson (Oncology Unit) on January 24 and then we are hoping to go away for a few days.

“We were planning to go north, maybe to John O’Groats, but we weren’t sure about the medical facilities there so we are now planning on going to the Peak District hopefully.” Margaret (52) served in the Armed Forces, but returned to her home village of Fallin 11 years ago.

She met Roy, 50, around seven years ago and the couple had been planning to get married next year before changing their plans due to her illness.
