Teachers help out in Uganda

- Robert Fairnie

Teachers from across the Stirling area have the chance to spend four weeks working to improve lives in Uganda this summer.

The Wood Foundation’s Global Learning Partnership (GLP), which is run in partnership with Stirling Council, allows teaching professionals to undertake an overseas placement.

This placement is designed to give those taking part the chance the share their expertise in classroom practice while increasing their knowledge and awareness of the issues facing those living in different countries and cultures.

Stirling High teacher Matt Brown and Lesley Kettles from St Modan’s High each spent four weeks of their summer holiday working with staff and pupils in Rwandan schools as part of the programme last year.

Lesley said: “This experience enabled me to get first-hand experience of life in another country and has restored my passion for education.

“I have grown as a person both professionally and personally and would encourage others to step out of their comfort zone and take up an opportunity like this.”

And Matt, who is set to return to the programme again this year, added: “Working with colleagues from both Rwanda and Scotland has enabled me to develop further in my quest to become a global citizen and instil these values in the young people I work with.”

The GLP is partnering with charity Redearth Education who aim to give every child in Uganda the opportunity to thrive at school.
