Fancy dress fun at Harry Potter evening

- Robert Fairnie

Fans of a famous boy wizard made their way to Stirling city centre for an evening of spellbinding fun last week.

The third annual Harry Potter Book Night took place at the Central Library on Thursday with a host of quizzes, crafts, potions, treasure hunts and games on offer.

Dozens of bookworms enjoyed the evening with many donning some striking Potter-themed fancy dress – with Harry, Ron, Hermione all taking a break from their studies at Hogwarts to join in the fun.

As the youngsters arrived to the free but ticketed event they were fitted with the famous sorting hat before being split up into the four houses – Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw and Slytherin.

And after some hotly contested games Hufflepuff were crowned house champions for the second time in three years.

Publishers Bloomsbury launched the book night in 2015 with the aim of passing on the magic of Harry Potter to young readers who were yet to discover J.K. Rowling’s classic books.

Deborah McFadzean, community library officer, was involved in the organisation of the evening and she said: “We had 45 kids there in total and they all seemed to really enjoy it.

“What better way to involve the children of the community once again to come and share their love of Harry Potter books than in their local library.

“We all love to be part of the magic of Harry Potter and of books in general. The aim is to introduce new readers to Harry Potter while keeping the magic alive for those who already love it.”
