To tell you the truth I’m sick of Trump already

- Gareth Jones

Reginald D Hunter is known for being an angry man at times on stage.

However the comedian said that a recent break has given him time to reflect on life, and is feeling refreshed ahead of a mammoth UK tour.

“Essentially for the first time in 17 years, I decided to take some time off. I just sat and stared out of the window and didn’t think about much,” he told the Observer

“I mostly stayed at home, I have a nice house so why not spend some time in it?

“I feel fresh and like I have just started being funny again. I had so many years where I was angry on stage, but you just have to find a place where you are comfortable.”

Reginald, who has been touring for almost two decades, visits Stirling on May 18, with his new show Some People V Reginald D Hunter taking place at the Albert Halls.

As an American living in Britain, the comic admits recent political events mean that he has more material than ever, but is tired of being quizzed about his homeland’s new President.

“I get sick of thinking about Trump, I am sick of reading about him, sick of being amazed by what he does and sick of being embarrassed about him.

“You see all the things he does on the news, but think how am I meant to change this? I can’t call him up and say stop doing that.”

Despite regular appearances in Glasgow, Reginald has not called in at the City of the Rock for a while, and is looking forward to the show.

“I can’t remember if I have been to Stirling,” he said. “I think I have but not for a long time. I love Scotland, if I had more money and less work then I would definitely buy a house up there.”

The loose theme to comedian’s tour is looking at the truth, an issue which has been thrust into the news in recent months.

“I think the general theme of the show is the truth,” he said. “I remember when terrorist acts used to just be called lies. I don’t want liberals to start using lies, cause if they do then we are screwed.

“I don’t know how long fake news has been going on for. Everybody seems to think they know who is responsible for the world being screwed up. Whether its the Muslims, the Jews, Trump, Brexit, but everyone agrees that something is wrong just now.”

Reginald started warmup shows for his new tour last week, and will play 50 dates before returning to the Fringe in the summer. “The Edinburgh Festival is a marathon, there are so many long nights and so much booze. You play one month in the same place. It took me three or four years to learn how to do it.”

Recent events mean that the comedian’s act is constantly being amended, and Reginald said that this will continue throughout the year.

“Hopefully a comedy show is a living thing. If it is living then it has to evolve. Until the last date, the show will be changing and will be evolving.”
