Heavy blow for Wanderers

-

Stirling Wanderers 1st XI went down heavily to Fidra Lions in their latest East District Hockey Division One match at Meadowmill Sports Centre byTranent.

The home side scored two early goals then added two more just after the breake. A fifth goal near the end completed the rout with the best Stirling efforts coming from Asif Rasool and Oliver Lowrie.

Garth Eklund was the hero for the seconds as Stirling came from behind in a hard-fought match with Peebles in Division Three at home.

Al Santi went close several times but was thwarted by the strong Peebles defence.

Stirling then conceded against the run of play at a penalty corner shortly before the end of the first half but jeust after the break, Joost Mortier providing the assist which allowed Eklund to finish low and hard into the bottom corner.

Stirling pressed for the winner and Ross Mackay, Ian Bryson, Ian Brett all went close in the dying minutes while keeper Matthew Taylor made a string of fine saves in the second half to earn the point.

Credible mentions to defenders Duncan Bowie and Michael Wragg, Alan Roughead, Thomas Hanson, Euan Finch who all fought hard in the midfield and debutant Max Oldfield. Stirling Wanderers Ladies 2nds XI went down 4-2 to Linlithgow in a controversial East Division Three at home.

The girls started well with a quick goal from M Riddell but Linlithgow replied before the break.

Riddell scored her second as Stirling dominated the first part of the second half with the ball rarely leaving the opposition half.

However a long ball and a controversial decision led to a penalty flick which was converted by the visitors and despite protests and some valiant attempts, the girls never quite recovered from the decision. and Linlithgow went on to rub salt in the wounds with two late goals.
