A talented Cambusbarron dancer has landed a coveted spot at a top performing arts school.

Tess Dewar (16) will begin training for her dream career in September when she embarks on a three-year, full-time dance course at The MGA Academy of Performing Arts in Edinburgh.

The Stirling High pupil secured her place after an intensive audition process which saw her perform a number of different routines before facing an interview.

Tess, who began dancing at the age of two and has been taking classes at Monument Dance Centre in Causewayhead for most of her life, is looking to carve out a career as a professional dancer.

But in the meantime she can’t wait to get started at one of the country’s leading performing arts academies.

She said: “I really enjoyed the audition as everyone was really friendly. We did a few workshops and then I performed a solo lyrical dance.

“I found the workshops quite challenging, which I liked, as I want to train somewhere that will make me the best dancer I can possibly be.

“I felt quite nervous when I opened my acceptance letter as I really wanted them to offer me a place. I still can’t quite believe I’m going to start training there in September as this is what I’ve wanted since I was a little girl.

“When I finish my training I’d love to get a job on a tour, but as long as I’m dancing I’ll be happy.”

Tess was among the dancers performing at Glasgow’s Commonwealth Games three years ago and she insists this experience proved invaluable in building her self-belief.

She said: “I performed at the closing ceremony and it was a phenomenal experience. I spent my summer in rehearsals and had such a great time. Performing at the event gave me confidence and I think that helped me at my audition for the MGA Academy.”

Proud mum Karen told the Observer: “She had a look around a few different schools, including some down in England, but this was always the one she wanted. She was so happy to get a place but she has worked really hard for it.

“Her timetable is going to be quite intensive so she will stay through there, but it’s going to be such an incredible experience for her. She’s just dying to go now – she can’t wait.”

Andrew Gowland, managing director of The MGA Academy, said: “We look forward to welcoming Tess. She is already very talented and impressed all the staff during her audition, but we are confident the training she receives here will ensure that she improves as a performer and help her achieve her dream of being on stage.”
