Cross Country Success A total of 44 pupils braved the cold to race in the Stirling Schools Cross Country contest at Queen Victoria School last week. There was some impressive running with the team giving one of their best ever performances. Highlights included Cameron MacMillan taking second place in the P6 Boys race while he and his team-mates – Killian Trenholm and Murray Dickson – were third in the team competition. The P7 Girls race was won by Elise Graham Marr while the team – comprising Elise, Tara Mathewson and Heather Hale – took second place. In the S1/2 Boys race Euan Wond was third while Carrie Banks was third in the S1/2 Girls. Ben MacMillan was second in the S3/4 Boys race with Tom Graham Marr following him in to take third place. Beaconhurst’s S3/4 Girls Team – Lizzie Winton, Bethany Burch and Hannah Campbell - took third place while Dan Hesp was the winner of the S5/6 Boys race. Round Square Robert Johnston and Jonathan Ackroyd (S4) recently travelled to Romania to take part in the Round Square European and Mediterranean Conference hosted by Translyvania College in Cluj Napoca. Mrs Haughton, Deputy Head Pastoral and Round Square Representative, and Mrs Tierney, House Head and Round Square Representative, were also at the conference and all four Beaconhurst delegates had the opportunity to take part in Rethinking Leadership workshop activities alongside visiting Baisoara, a mountain village, to see traditional customs and the local salt mines. Service activities over the weekend included working in a local primary school. The trip proved a fantastic experience full of opportunities to mix and share ideas with other students from many countries under the Round Square umbrella. Healthy Living Nursery youngsters had the chance to create their individual smoothies during a topic on healthy eating. The children talked about the healthy foods they enjoy at home before being allowed into the school kitchen to create their very own smoothies with the help of catering staff. Sodexo, who provide Beaconhurst’s catering and are winners of the Silver Soil Association Award, provided all the ingredients and awarded prizes at the end for the most creative smoothie! The children took responsibility and ownership of the task and let their imaginations guide them in the fun aspects of healthy eating. They also learned how all kinds of fruit and vegetables can be turned into tasty healthy snacks. Expressive Arts Workshop Youngsters from J1-3 enjoyed an adventure to get to the ‘Toy Story’. They played drama games, acted out characters and followed a brightly coloured trail to find the toy box set that had been created for them. There they played and sang including a fantastic rendition of ‘You’ve Got A Friend In Me’. After this, children from J4-6 went on a voyage to the jungle where they became animals from movie classic ‘The Jungle Book’. They used a mixture of fast and slow movements and sound effects to bring the jungle to life and incorporated impressive African drumming into their performance. During the afternoon, the Beaconhurst Community Orchestra came together to play ‘The Bare Necessities’, ‘Goldfinger’ and ‘Everything I Do’. Pupils from age eight upwards, teachers and friends worked with their instruments in sectionals before rehearsing together to produce a mini concert for friends and family. Burns and Scottish Poetry Competition The annual competition was held recently in the Learning Resource Centre. This year judges, Mr Pennock, Mrs Harris, Mrs Waters and Rev Stuart Fulton enjoyed a rich array of poetry and song, before the difficult task of deciding on winners. The Burns Quaich was awarded jointly to Jade Campbell for best song and Natasha Logan for best poetry recital. Eco Schools The Eco-School, led by Social Subjects teacher Miss Lester, recently attended the Global Classroom Conference at Edinburgh Zoo. The Global Classroom Conference aims to raise awareness of global environmental issues, and this year the theme was Biodiversity in Africa. Staff farewell Staff and pupils bade farewell to mathematics teacher, Mrs Harris as she left Wallace High School to take up her position as Principal Teacher Mathematics, Business Education and Computing at Bannockburn High School.
