Golden couple’s joy at renewing vows

Ricky and Lilian celebrate with family and friends

- Donald Morton

Doune couple Ricky and Lilian Kujawa celebrated their golden wedding recently by renewing their vows in front of family and friends.

The Kujawas celebrated their big day on Saturday, January 28 with a full Nuptial Mass at St Fillans Church and afterwards with afternoon tea at Stirling Court Hotel, Stirling University.

Ricky and Lilian met in St Andrews High School, Kirkcaldy in 1963, marrying in 1967.

The couple, who live in Deanston Gardens, have two married sons, Simon and Ricky, and four grandchildren - Samantha (19), Tom (16), Louise (14) and Maria (14).

On the anniversary before renewing their vows, Lilian came down the aisle on her grandson’s arm followed by the three granddaughters.

Her 50 year-old wedding dress was on display, a symbol of 1960s fashion and their sons spoke about the 60s as a time of great hope and promise for young newlyweds.

Ricky enjoyed a long and successful career with Nationwide Building Society before building a new career in business and consultancy. Lilian first worked as a librarian and retains a great interest in reading.

Like most marriages, things do not always go to plan. Lilian developed a serious form of M.E. in the early 1980s and it took a great deal of adjustment for the whole family to work around it.

The family are most appreciative of the help of friends, health professionals and indirectly from Stirling Council through their support of Dial-A-Journey and the Food Train.

There was a no-gifts policy at the anniversary celebrations but donations on the day raised £1200 for M.E. Research.

Lilian said: “The secret of a good marriage is to work hard, especially when things go wrong, communication and a shared sense of humour.

“Starting with nothing gives a great incentive to striving to build a future together.”
