Sister act take gold and silver in hurdles

Speedy Cook girls wow the crowd at Emirates

Balfron sisters Briagha and Coirilidh Cook were celebratin­g after taking a one-two at the Scottish under-15 indoor championsh­ips in the 60m hurdles at the Emirates Arena on Sunday.

The sisters both won national titles at under-13 level in 2015 and 2016 but this is the first time they had competed head to head in the same age group.

They both set personal bests as fastest qualifiers for the final with Briagha running 9.43 and Coirilidh 9.55 and when the final came it was a close run affair with Briagha taking the lead but Coirilidh closing. Briagha held on for gold in a personal best 9.36, with Coirilidh just behind with a PB of 9.40.

Briagha had already been on the podium after she set a PB 5.11m in the long jump to break the club indoor record for silver.

Shona McLay was also on good form in the 60m.

After getting through heats and semis she set a PB of 8.27 for seventh place in the final.

She then just missed out on the podium in the 200m taking fourth place in a PB 26.97.

Daniel Bruce finished a respectabl­e fifth place in the 60m hurdles final in 10.27 and was eighth in the high jump (1.42m) and 12th in the long jump (4.36m).

Coirstaidh Ainsworth placed ninth in the 800m running a season’s best 2.28.11.

Naomi Howlieson tested herself out gaining experience in her new under-15 age group placing 16th in the high jump with 1.27m.

For Central’s under-13 athletes it was all about experience with all of them competing at a national championsh­ips for the first time.

Euan Campbell was a respectabl­e seventh in the long jump with 4.28m and 12th in the 800m with a season’s best 2.33.58.

Cameron MacMillan placed eighth in his first ever 1500m race in 5.24.90 and Ellie Ross set PBs at 200m (33.92) and long jump (4.59m) along with a season’s best at 800m (3.01.80).
