Drive to buy brain scanner is launched by Towell family
A campaign to help protect the lives of Stirling boxers has been launched.
“Iron”Mike Towell - a member of the 1314 Boxing Club - died in September of last year after being injured in a fight in Glasgow.
The 25-year-old welterweight, who trained at the Springkerse club a few times a week, was rushed to hospital in Glasgow where he was diagnosed with severe bleeding and swelling to his brain and passed away the day after his fight with Dale Evans.
Now his partner Chloe Ross (24) and mum Tracey Towell (52) have launched a campaign to buy a brain scanner that can be used by clubs in Stirling and Dundee to spot any problems that may arise with their fighters.
“Myself and Mike’s mum have been so overwhelmed with all the support from everyone,”said Chloe.“We want to start fundraising ourselves to buy a brain scanner for Dundee and Stirling boxers - two places Michael trained.
“Obviously any opponents can use it too if needed. These scanners can detect if there is a problem in the head.“
“(This is) something we wish was there when Michael was complaining of headaches.”
The pair will do a joint sky dive on July 1 to kickstart the £13,000 drive. Chloe added:“We have lost a partner, a son, a friend and Rocco lost his daddy.
“If we could prevent this happening to anyone else we will try our best.”
